Dating back to the 17th Century, this wonderful crooked heart, (also known as luckenbooth brooches or 'Witches heart') were used as talismen to ward off evil spirits. Later, they were given as love tokens; the receiver was said to have captured another's heart and was said to have 'bewitched' that someone. The stunning garnet crown atop of the crooked heart represented loyalty.
This brooch is in excellent antique condition despite its 200 year age. While they still shimmer and sparkle in the light, a x10 loupe shows age and wear to the garnets, with evidence of at least two replacements over the years. I have taken this into consideration when pricing this item. The brooch in its entirety measures approximately 2.8 cm x 2.2 cm and weighs 2.2 grams.
Rolled Gold was first used in the 19th Centuary and was comprised of thin sheets of gold fused with a base metal. Having far more gold content than gold plated jewellery, it wont tarnish easily, and will last a lifetime.
